Reflection of the art exhibition of George Fanaras «SinoTwo»

During the days of 8-29 September 2017, the art exhibition Art & Ethics, Reflection through Art’ took place at Covent Garden in Brussels. This event has been composed by a significant collection of canvases, made by the rising young artist Mr Giorgos Fanaras (SinoTwo). The main concept of this exhibition was based on the field of ethics and the ways that the art’s contribution could increase people’s awareness. Through a variety of ethical topics linked to our modern era, the artist is aiming to magnify the visitors’ attention and understanding about topics like the people’s isolation, the idea of judgement, the destruction of natural sources or the recent increasing flow of war immigrants. It is obvious that these paintings are trying to deliver a clear message for morality issues which are being demonstrated in different forms like scenes based on the modern everyday life, the ancient Greek mythology or recent moral dilemmas.

Observing the technical background of these paintings, the art pieces have been created by art materials like acrylics, oils and spray cans that the artist used to express his conceptual art using dark or light colors and in some parts the color pallet is being more expanding. Apart from the colors, the lines and the brushstrokes are being presented in some cases with more blurry and abstract effects, while some color drops and fades provide more artistic abstraction. The human figures in his art pieces have been demonstrated with natural shapes and movements providing a harmonic and realistic synthesis. Through his art, we could detect the combination of several elements of the painting from early Greek artists which is linked to the more recent art techniques like street art.

At this point, I would like to mention one of the most impressing art pieces of this exhibition named ‘The Glass Prison’. In this painting, the artist expresses his idea by painting with dark colors the frame and outline the canvas’ concept, and he emphasizes with light colors the concept in the middle, by providing an artistic symmetry to the general aesthetic quality of this painting. In this piece of art, we can see a person sitting in his own living room watching television, while the whole environment is made by glass, referring to the television screen.

Outside this glass prison, there are two guards standing and guarding the main figure. The living room can be seen from the outside world, despite the need for privacy and protection. The color drops transfuse a dramatic tone and the lighting colors under the floor creates the illusion that this glass prison is hovering on the air. The main concept talks about the creation of people’s comfort zone and the choice of a life style based on impersonal relationships through the social media. Despite the daily sharing of personal data and moments, the humans remain isolated in their own prison, which despite its transparency, it remains a prison. Truly this painting inflames connotations and reflects the modern way of living.

The main objective of all these paintings is not focusing on providing answers to any of these moral dilemmas, but it tries to reveal their real nature. The visitors are being called to search deeper inside themselves and find out what is really ethic or not. The message of this artistic event is clear and loud. Art can play a key role to educate and inform people on essential and philosophical topics like ethics. This fact underlines the value of art on highlighting intertemporal issues that have influenced the humans’ spiritual evolution and this idea is representing one of the main ideological frameworks and purposes of this art exhibition.

Reflecting to all these, I would like to wish all the best for a bright future in the field of arts to the young and rising artist Giorgos Fanaras, who has presented a very interesting art exhibition in Brussels. I am looking forward to meeting his future artistic projects, which are based on the innovative concept of illustrating ideas about critical topics for the humanity. Art can inspire and alert people’s perspective about several domains of life, as in the occasion of Mr. Giorgos Fanaras, who has fulfilled the purpose of his art.
